Juan Miguel Navarro Carranza

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Structural Engineering with minor in Computer Science at Stanford University. My research explores reinforcement fracture, innovative structural systems, and functional recovery. I specialize in characterizing the structural response of reinforced concrete and steel buildings under earthquakes, focusing on their post-earthquake safety and functionality. 

My areas of expertise include earthquake engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, performance-based engineering, nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures, seismic hazards, and risk analysis.

Interests

I am interested in developing and applying novel and powerful methods to solve engineering problems. I am curious about the different technologies we can develop to represent and reason about our complex world, even beyond the current AI paradigm. I am currently excited about foundational models, graph representation learning, graph neural networks, reinforcing learning, as well as the value of explainable machine learning methods.
